Top Ten Tips for... Reducing and Managing Stress

April is Stress Awareness Month, a valuable time to learn about the causes of stress and ways to manage it. Stress can become overwhelming and negatively impact both our physical health and emotional well-being. By recognizing the signs of stress and practicing effective management techniques, we can build resilience and create healthier habits for life.

In this article, we’re sharing 10 practical tips and techniques to help you manage stress.

   1. Create Boundaries

It is important to protect your time and well-being. Whether it’s in your personal or professional life, boundaries help prevent burnout. This could be setting specific work hours and sticking to them or saying no to additional tasks if you are already at capacity.

   2. Unplug and Recharge

In today’s digital age, we can be bombarded with notifications and information. Unplugging is great for mental clarity and overall wellbeing. Consider scheduling daily ‘unplug’ times, where you avoid screens, or engaging in more offline activities like reading, doing puzzles, or walking.

   3. Talk it Out

Sometimes, simply talking about your feelings can help more than you think. When you share your thoughts with someone you trust, it helps you release emotions that you have built up, and you feel supported and understood which can help reduce stress.

   4. Journal your Thoughts

Journaling is a powerful way to reflect on your day and make sense of your emotions. Writing allows you to track your mood and notice patterns that can affect your mental health, and releases stress by putting your emotions into words rather than holding them in.

   5. Declutter your Space

A cluttered environment can lead to a cluttered mind. Organising your space helps promote a sense of calm. Focus on the areas where you spend most time and create a space that feels peaceful. This can boost productivity!

   6. Try Guided Meditation Apps

Meditation apps can help practice mindfulness and reduce stress. They often include guided sessions tailored to different needs, breathing exercises, and tracking features that help you monitor your progress.

   7. Engage in a Hobby

Finding a hobby you love is a great way to relax and take your mind off things. This could be anything such as painting, knitting, singing, or gardening. Hobbies tap into your creativity, and provide a break from responsibilities that can be overwhelming. Spending time doing something you really enjoy can boost your mood.

   8. Use the ‘2 Minute Rule’

The 2 minute rule is a productivity technique that helps break down tasks into manageable chunks. If something takes less than 2 minutes to do, do it straight away. This can help prevent procrastination by tackling quick tasks. In turn, this can reduce a build up of small, lingering tasks that can become overwhelming.

   9. Don’t Eat at your Desk

Eating at your desk, especially while working can contribute to stress. Taking the time to step away from your desk can help promote mindfulness by focusing on your meal. It also helps you create a clear boundary by separating work time and rest time.

    10. Rest is Productive

It’s essential to remember that rest is a form of self-care, and everybody needs to rest. It allows your body to recover, preventing burnout. Good rest improves cognitive function, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Taking regular breaks throughout the day boosts productivity overall.
