Top 10 Tips for... Achieving Work-Life Balance
- Plan and prioritise - Setting yourself goals, planning your time and setting priorities help to give clarity, increase your productivity and feel more in control. Make sure you do this for both work and non-work related activities.
- Give yourself structure – Whilst work-life balance is built on flexibility, to make it work effectively you also need structure so that you know what is happening when. This might mean determining where you are going to work and when, ensuring you have the infrastructure in place such as a mobile phone and laptop and a quiet place at home to work. It also means building in time for you and your family.
- Manage your time – Having set yourself goals, established your priorities and put structure in place, make sure that you do the right thing at the right time and in the most time effective way. Focus on what will help you to achieve your goals and priorities; simplify, delegate or remove anything that is too time consuming and doesn’t give high pay-back. Aim for excellence, not perfection.
- Make sure you are trained in the techniques that will help – To make this work for you, equip yourself with the skills you need to manage your time, set goals, be effective, manage stress etc. There are lots of ways to do this from reading a book to doing an on-line module.
- Take time out – This means having a total break, even if it is just a long weekend; leave your mobile behind and trust others to deal with what arises.
- Treat yourself – Once you have achieved your goals, give yourself a reward.
- Look after yourself – Make sure that you eat and sleep well and build in time to exercise. That way you feel good about yourself and are better able to stay on top of things. Pay attention also to important things like having a suitable office desk and chair so that you are not causing stress or harm to your body.
- Focus on being positive, passionate and enthusiastic – Surround yourself with positive people, look for opportunities, reframe the way you think about things so that you see it positively.
- Enjoy your job – Make the most of your job and the opportunities it brings, the people you work with and the place where you work. If you don’t enjoy these things consider looking for a change.
- Enjoy your life –Think of your life as a journey that you are in control of. Focus on what you want to do and how you can develop yourself. Enjoy the journey!
