Employment Law: How will the Government's plans to 'Make Work Pay' impact employment law?

The UK Government’s plans to 'Make Work Pay' are likely to impact many aspects of employment law and definitely something to all keep a close eye on.

There has been much debate about the proposed right to claim unfair dismissal from day one of employment, therefore, the Government plans to consult further and employers will have an opportunity to present their views on this.

Wider changes include; earlier access to some parental rights, the removal of qualification periods for statutory sick pay and the right to disconnect.

A commitment to deliver the majority of the government’s ‘Make Work Pay’ proposals has been laid out in the Employment Law Bill which was introduced to parliament this month for a 1st and 2nd reading.

As indicated above, the government has committed to consultion on many of the most impactful proposals in the bill and amending it accordingly as it progresses through parliament.

They expect to begin consulting on these reforms in 2025, meaning that the majority of reforms will take effect no earlier than 2026.

They advise that changes to unfair dismissal legislation will take effect no sooner than autumn 2026.

We will keep you posted as confirmed dates of these changes are made available. Chrysos HR will also be providing guidance on the practical application of these changes in forthcoming months.
